SearchHelp Parental Controls software now iPhone-ready

sentry_parental_controls.gifA leading developer of web-based parental control software has announced that it will released a new version on September 3rd, to include compatibility with the iPhone and its Safari browser.

“We believe that Apple has engineered a revolutionary device that perfectly blends sophisticated features with legendary Apple ease of use. This is the perfect device to showcase and launch our upcoming mobile initiatives and we are excited to bring to market the first parental control interface for the iPhone,” said Charles Davis, CTO of SearchHelp.

Analyst: iPhone could exceed first quarter sales target

According to a UBS analyst, Apple could easily top its own target of 730,000 iPhones sold in the first quarter, shifting at least 800,000, despite “typical moderation in excitement from launch and extremely high expectations.”

Last month, Apple said that it expected to sell its millionth iPhone in its fourth quarter, ending September.

South Korea’s second mobile provider in talks to sell iPhone

Apple iPhoneKT Freetel Ltd, South Korea’s second-largest mobile service provider, has said that it’s in talks with Apple to get the rights to sell the iPhone.

However, a spokesman also said that they were in talks with other foreign mobile phone manufacturers “to purchase third generation mobile phones”, which may mean that they’ll be expecting Apple to make a 3G iPhone before taking it on.

GeoHot claims world’s first unlocked iPhone

GeoHot (George Hotz) claims to have the world’s first unlocked iPhone — in other words, it’s no longer tethered to AT&T and can be used to make calls on another network using an ordinary SIM card.

The video shows GeoHot making a phone call using a standard T-Mobile SIM card in the iPhone.

His blog post reads:

Our group has agreed to release the method in one week. The current method involves taking apart your phone and doing some complicated soldering, with a high probablity of a bricked phone. Although after the phone is unlocked all the hardware can be removed. We hope to find a software unlock very soon. So in one week exactly from this blog post(thats less than the time it takes to ship a turbosim) we will release simple step by step instructions for unlocking, probably not even involving hardware. Sorry about the wait, but I assure you it will be worth it.

Who’s betting Apple will find a way to disable this in their next update?

Latest iPhone software update improvements debatable

Apple iPhoneApple’s latest software update for the iPhone, taking it to version 1.0.2, had some users reporting that it had boosted their wireless reception, or improved call volume. Results were not universally acknowledged, however.

Apple’s official word on the update was that it fixed bugs. Perhaps poor, improvable Wi-Fi reception counted as a bug.

Again, Apple’s update erased any modifications users may have added to get third-party applications onto the iPhone.

AT&T promise to save paper for future bills

att_logo.gifAfter the tree-boggling bills received by iPhone users earlier this month, AT&T has promised that they’ll be providing shorter, summarised bills from now on.

These new bills are about three pages long, which still sounds a little excessive, but par for the course.

Anyone who wants the environmentally-unfriendly version can pay $1.99 per phone line to get the full version on paper.

AT&T claim that the bill changes were underway for all of their wireless customers, regardless of the recent publicity, which included Justine Ezarik’s popular video of her unpacking a 300-page bill.

Is iPhone a closed door to forensics experts

Tech-savvy, but PC biased, forensics experts may be left shaking their head in bemusement at the closed architecture of the iPhone, according to an interesting article at WIRED magazine.

Though some say that the iPhone contains more data than the average cellphone, actually extracting that data is another matter.

“The iPhone is evil,” says Amber Schroader, CEO of Utah-based Paraben, a leader in digital-forensics software development. “It’s Mac OS X, and it’s a completely closed system.”

Though it’s easy to spot the PC user who hasn’t entered the “highly specialised” world of Mac forensics, even Apple experts are having trouble tapping into the device. Existing software and data-extraction systems won’t cut it, and experts may have to resort to photographing data on the screen instead.

Finding a linked computer may provide additional clues, however. In any case, proving that data extracted from the iPhone has not been tampered with isn’t easy.

Perhaps criminals have found a relatively safe haven in the iPhone… for now.
