TUAW hands on: the simple joys of Koi Pond

About a week or so ago, I spent $0.99 at iTunes to pick up a copy of Koi Pond. With all the software that constantly moves onto and off of my iPhone, it should say something that over a week later, Koi Pond is still installed. It’s a little treasure.

Koi Pond provides exactly the experience its title suggests: it puts a virtual Koi Pond onto your iPhone, allowing you to place plants and feed the fish. The fish in question swim around the screen and run away from the rippled waves you create when messing with the water. If you leave your finger still enough, eventually a koi or two will investigate and nibble on your finger before darting off on its pre-existing fishy business.

In theory, there is no point to Koi Pond. It’s there to experience and enjoy. In practice, my elder children issue each other challenges: “Make the worst pond” (no fish, no plants, no sunlight, brown rocks, rotting food) or “Make the most psychotic koi” (one fish, sunlight, lots of splashing), etc.

For $0.99, it’s a great deal on a little toy. Turn off autolock and cheerfully burn out your screen by sitting it on a stand on your desk. The fish will swim and burble ad infinitum. (It helps to have the iPhone docked while doing this.)

Koi Pond is available for iPhone and iPod touch. It costs $0.99 at the iPhone App Store.

Panic releases Coda 1.5

Panic has released Coda 1.5, a free update to my favorite all-in-one web development application.

Coda 1.5 adds several major new features, including find-and-replace across multiple files and a fully-integrated Subversion client.

Also included in the update is a user-customizable bookshelf, which allows you to specify any given website as a “book.” You can also enter a sample search URL with a wildcard character, and command-click on terms to look for them in the book you created. Syntax highlighting has also been improved, as well as performance running under Leopard. Full release notes are available, too.

The update is free for all registered Coda users, and $99 for new users. Discounts are available for registered Transmit owners, too.

96% of mobile traffic to engadget.com driven by iPhone/iPod touch

While he knew that iPhone generated a significant amount of Internet traffic to popular websites, even Peter Burrows (businessweek.com) was surprised when he perused the analysis Engadget recently posted. With iPhone ringing up nearly 80% of the traffic to engadget.com and iPod touch holding on to 16%, that meant that all other mobile devices combined accounted for the remaining 4%.

Apple seeds Safari 4.0 dev preview 2

Apple has started seeding developers with Safari 4.0 preview 2. You may recall that the last developer preview was issued in June after the WWDC.

Safari 4.0 DP2 has a build number of 40A12. Just like the last build, this edition scored a perfect 100/100 on the Acid3 test. Developers with access to the Apple Connect website can download Safari 4.0 preview 2 for Mac OS X Leopard, Tiger, and for Windows.

The new version gives users the option to save web pages as an application that can be launched independently of Safari (similar in concept to the SSBs Prism and Fluid). There is no word on when Safari 4.0 might be released to the public.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Quick Tip of the Week: Custom Print Settings

The Print dialog offers numerous options (e.g., black and white/color, letter/legal, single or double-sided) for controlling how your documents print. If you find yourself returning to the same set of options frequently, you can save your custom print settings as a preset and save yourself some time the next time you print a similar document. Find out how by watching the most recent Quick Tip of the Week.

Looking for a house? Take your iPhone.

“House hunting? Forget the listing agents and classified ads. Now you can find homes for sale with a few taps on a smartphone,” reports Prashant Gopal (businessweek.com). Those taps can launch the Trulia Real Estate Search, “one of the Web’s most visited home listing sites” and a recent App Store addition, StreetEasy Real Estate, Home Finder, or FrontDoor.com, which Gopal says, will be on the App Store market soon.

“Multiple applications enhance iPhone 3G”

“I’m still impressed,” writes Mark Kellner (washingtontimes.com). He finds iPhone 3G “a powerful little device, capable of doing a heck of a lot of things, and it does this in a small, sleek package that’s easy to operate.” Particularly impressed by the App Store, which he calls “quite smart,” he notes that the “ability to load third-party applications…makes the iPhone more like a miniature computer than just a phone.”

Woman sues Apple, claims false iPhone advertising

A Birmingham, Alabama, woman has sued Apple, claiming its television advertisements about the iPhone 3G being twice as fast as its predecessor are false. She also claims her handset is defective.

The woman, Jessica Smith, is seeking class-action status for her suit.

According to The Birmingham News, Smith’s iPhone connects most often to the slower, older EDGE network, and not the 3G network that the advertisements claim.

Apple has a policy of not commenting on pending litigation, but Apple is, as Macworld puts it, “repeatedly sued” over a variety of complaints.

Orange pays Polish actors to line up for iPhone

Here’s an odd story. When the iPhone launches in Poland today (8/22), there will be long lines at Orange retail stores. In fact, it’s guaranteed.

Reuters is reporting that Orange has hired actors to queue up at “…twenty stores” on Friday to spark in interest. Before you say, “That’s crazy,” consider that many Americans were willing to sit in line for a week. For free.

Perhaps Orange is trying to pad a potentially lukewarm reception to high-priced plans. For example, the base iPhone plan will cost 195PLN ($45) per month and will offer users 150 minutes of talk time plus 500MB of data.

Clever marketing or dirty pool? And what happens when the next actor in line reaches the counter and doesn’t buy anything?

Terminal Tips: Make hidden Dock icons transparent

Without using Exposé, it is hard to tell which Mac OS X applications are hidden and which aren’t. But, with a simple Terminal hack, you can have all your application icons displayed as transparent. Simply open Terminal.app (Applications > Utilities) and type the following command exactly:

defaults write com.apple.Dock showhidden -bool YES

Once you type the command and press enter, you need to restart the Dock by typing “killall Dock” and pressing enter. Once the Dock restarts and you hide applications, you will notice that hidden applications have a transparent look. If you want to reverse the command, just replace the “YES” with a “NO” and restart the Dock again.

Woz talks to developers at Intel Developer Forum

Steve “Woz” Wozniak is often considered the “God” of Apple. He was the designer of the first ever Apple computers (Apple / & Apple //). At a recent developer forum at Intel, Woz gave a bit of advice to the engineers. He told them that, “the right way of going through life” is pursuing a vision without compromise.

“If you have technical ideas, if you know what you’re good at, and you know what you’re doing is right … you have to shut them out,” Woz said, in reference to others telling you how to do something.

According to InformationWeek, Woz went on to discuss other topics. He talked about being a successful inventor. While on this topic, he admitted that not having money helps the creativity.

InformationWeek has the full details on the interview.

Surprisingly few people have made videos about GTS World Racing for the iPhone. Here’s the cream of the small crop.

Mission TUAWpossible: Back up your iPhone with Time Machine

Good morning, Mr. Phelps. The man you are looking at is Justin T. iPhoneuser, one of our loyal TUAW readers. Recently, Justin’s iPhone went kablooey and when he tried to restore, he found that his backups were corrupted. He lost a great deal of data and time, all because Time Machine hadn’t backed up his iPhone’s data.

Your mission, Jim, should you choose to accept it, is to help Justin back up his data with Time Machine so he never has to face this kind of data loss again. As usual, should any of your team members be caught by Apple, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This post will self-destruct in five seconds…

[This is the part where the Theme Music usually plays.]

Get a Mac, get a job

As the economy makes with the poop, we can all use a little bit of extra help finding work. Whether it’s side projects, or full-time employment, there are plenty of jobs available for system administrators, programmers, and creative people — all who use a Mac.

I’ve assembled a collection of sites and job boards that cater to those with a technical and creative skill set — people who probably use a Mac. This is by no means a complete list, but should help anyone starting to look for work.

Comments consisting of “how could you dare possibly omit [insert name of board here]” will be met with resigned sighs from me, but cheers from our readers. So feel free to point people in the direction of boards that you’ve used or trusted before in comments.

Follow me across the jump for the list.

White 16GB iPhone coming to UK in larger quantities, Carphone Warehouse taking pre-orders

Opinion: Third party copy-and-paste application for iPhone is flawed

openclip.png

There’s a lot of buzz on the Internet at present about an open source bit of software called OpenClip, which is effectively cut-and-paste functionality that other developers can build into their applications to bring users closer to the feature many have been crying out for since the iPhone launched last year. The trouble is, the system is flawed. Leave aside the fact that it hasn’t been sanctioned by Apple, and focus on the issue that it’s only going to work with third party applications, and from developers who choose to implement it at that…

That’s great in theory, but what I don’t like is being forced to use the mobile version of the site when I want to use the full version.
