iPad suppliers forecast shipments of 8 – 10 million for calendar year 2010
Filed under: iPad
Analyst Katy Huberty at Morgan Stanley has published a research note forecasting shipments of 8 – 10 million iPads during calendar year 2010. That’s significantly more than previous estimates, which showed shipments of about 5 million devices. The note, as reported in a WSJ All Things Digital post, still maintains a sales estimate of greater than 6 million iPads for the year, since shipments are not necessarily equal to sales (some production remains in distribution channels at year-end).
Huberty notes that investors who are bearish on the iPad say that it lacks a “killer app.” She counters with speculation that the near-term target is for the sub-$800 notebook computer market, which currently appears to be in the range of 30 million units in the United States and 120 million units globally. In the long run, media (video, magazines, books) and apps that have been optimized for the iPad will significantly increase the market size.
For the short term (through May, 2010), suppliers are expecting to ship 2.5 million iPads. This is up sharply from Huberty’s initial estimate of 750,000 units through the end of June. Earlier this month, analysts were reporting that delays in early iPad production would limit the quantities available at launch.
Huberty has not been particularly bullish on Apple in the past several years, but has recently been citing Apple’s leadership in the mobile device space and talking about “bull case scenarios” for Apple’s future.

iPad Camera Connection Kit available for order, shipping in late April
Filed under: iPad

Many people making pre-orders or reservations for iPads were concerned when the iPad Camera Connection Kit didn’t show up on the Apple site as available for order. Never fear, for the the US$29 kit is now listed on Apple’s website as shipping in late April.
No explanation was given for the absence of the Camera Connection Kit in the original list of iPad accessories, although the company may have held back the SD and USB connectors that make up the kit for component quality testing.
Among the other accessories for the iPad, the VGA Adapter and Standard Dock will be available on April 3rd and the iPad case is scheduled for mid-April. The Keyboard Dock is showing late April availability, while the iPad 10W USB Power Adapters won’t make it to your home or office until sometime in May.

What will iPad magazine covers look like?
Jesse Rosten, a director in Northern California, asked himself what a magazine cover on the iPad should look like. He came up with the incredibly sweet Sunset Magazine mock up above. Jesse notes that until now, books and magazines have been traditionally portrait in orientation and film and TV has been landscape in orientation. He says with the iPad there’s no longer a strict landscape limitation for video. “Maybe you want your vid to appear full screen in portrait mode? Maybe you need a long, tall video banner-ad on the side of a digital magazine page? I think we’re going to start seeing a lot more vertically shot video soon,” Jesse wrote on his website. Click on over to his site to see some more incredible vertical footage and to read about the setup he used to capture his images.

When it comes to testing out new and exotic technologies, nobody holds a candle to Team Engadget. Good thing, too, because that candle, held too close to the Cell-Mate headset, might set your hair on fire while you talk on the phone — and nobody wants that.
Yes, for $14.99 you too can own the iPhone accessory demoed at CTIA that some describe as “Velcro, a curved wire and a plastic pad,” and make handsfree calls at will. Bluetooth, shmootooth — those little chatty thingamabobs are hard to pair, battery life is a joke, and they make you look like a crazy person when you’re talking on them. The Cell-Mate doesn’t make you look crazy; it makes you look like MacGyver’s not-so-bright nephew.
The video is embedded in the continuation of the post. Once you see it, I think you’ll agree that the Cell-Mate is, in fact, Velcro, curved wire and a plastic pad… plus a little thing we like to call “comedy gold.”
Thanks to Paul & Sean at Engadget for taking one for the team.

WSJ on the iPad will be $17.99 a month
Engadget reports that “people familiar with the matter” have stated The Wall Street Journal will be available on the iPad for a $17.99 a month subscription fee. The source comes from the Journal itself, so it’s a pretty good bet this is accurate info. Engadget notes that the iPad subscription price is about $11 a month less than the subscription fee for the paper version of the Journal, but the iPad version of the Journal will still be ad-supported via advertisers like Coca-Cola and FedEx.
A few other magazines are leaking pricing info, as well. Esquire plans to offer an ad-free, downloadable format of its April issue for $2.99, $2 less than the paper version’s price. Interestingly, the magazine will also be including five free music videos with the issue.
Although the electronic version of the Journal is well below the price of the newspaper version, $18 a month still seems pretty steep to me. Then again, I’ve spent the past ten years getting almost all of my news for free online, so I’m probably not their target demographic anyway.
At least The Wall Street Journal has a better pricing scheme for its electronic content than some other content providers; Men’s Health is reportedly going to charge the same $4.99 price for an iPad issue as they charge for the print version. If Men’s Health offered the iPad version of their issues ad-free for the same price that would be one thing, but its iPad version is both ad-supported and the same price as newsstand issues. This seems like a pretty boneheaded move on their part, but sadly, it’s one that I predict many other publishers will make over the coming months until they notice how dismal their sales are.

Tablet apps to be a $8 billion dollar industry?
Michael Wolf at GigaOm has put together an interesting report in which he believes that the tablet app market will grow to $8 billion annually by 2015. That’s a far cry from the $183 million tablet app market he predicts for 2010. Wolf believes that downloads of paid apps will be significantly higher for tablets than for smartphones. In 2011, he believes 179 million paid apps will be downloaded. By 2013 he expects that number will reach 630 million. He also believes that downloads of tablet apps (paid, free, and ad-supported) will reach 12 billion by 2015, up from 272 million in 2010.
Wolf is quick to point out that that $8 billion app market is only for paid apps on tablets — he doesn’t include apps that monetize in different ways like advertising, paid content subscriptions, or content downloads. While Wolf sees Apple leading the tablet market he also sees Microsoft and Google sharing in that market and believes that by 2015 the tablet market will be a 43-million-unit-per-year industry. With all the hype surrounding the iPad and tablets in general, the media’s constant use of the phrase “gold rush” to describe the coming iPad app market seem increasingly spot on.

AutoSmiley uses the iSight to turn your face into an emoticon
Filed under: Humor

I do like the idea that it turns emoticons into real expressions of emotion. When you actually see a “:)” or an “lol” in someone’s IM or email, you never really know if they’ve actually smiled or laughed at what you’ve typed earlier, and a program like this puts a little more power behind the colon and parenthesis. As the app’s description says, using it can go a little farther towards “enforcing honesty in your online communication.” The app is a free download for US, UK, and NL keyboards on the Mac.
The app was featured on Wednesday’s TUAW TV Live, which you can watch to see AutoSmiley in action.

Apple stock at another all-time high, market cap 4th in US
Filed under: Apple Financial
Apple’s stock rose to another record high earlier today, reaching $228.36 at market close. That’s almost another $10 above the record high it set back on March 5, which translates into nearly nine billion dollars in market capitalization gained in less than three weeks.
Apple’s market cap is so high that only three publicly-traded US companies have market caps higher than Apple’s: Exxon, Microsoft, and a little retailer called Wal-Mart. Apple will probably never catch up to Exxon’s market cap, which exceeds Apple’s by more than $100 billion, and it has another $55 billion to go before it can surpass Microsoft — not likely, but not impossible. Apple’s market cap is within striking distance of Wal-Mart’s, however, with only about $5.5 billion more to go before Apple surpasses the market value of the world’s largest retailer.

Now Software suspends day-to-day operations
Filed under: Software

Now Software, the company that for many years created and sold Now Up-To-Date and Contact to Mac users, has ceased day-to-day operations.
As noted in a tip from TUAW reader Barry T., attempts to view the Now Software website are now redirected to a Google Sites page. On that page, there’s a link to information about the current state of the company. That’s where this letter from Now’s John Wallace explains what killed the company (click the Read More link to view the letter):

For those of us who have watched Now Software go from a thriving software company to a floundering mess over the past few years, this is not entirely surprising. NightHawk had reached legendary vaporware status and it appeared that it would never really come out in a full working form. Many Now Up-To-Date and Contact users simply gave up and moved to other packages such as the popular Daylite from Marketcircle. Without an iPhone companion app, Now Up-To-Date and Contact and NightHawk simply became irrelevant to most Mac users.
The Google Sites pages provide access to the user forums and other help-related information from the old Now Software website.
Update: Several readers have noted that BusyMac, the company that develops and sells BusyCal and BusySync, was founded in 2007 by Dave Riggle and John Chaffee. The two developers were among the brains behind Now Up-To-Date, and left about the time NightHawk was just starting development.

I’m a Google Analytics geek. I think it’s one of the coolest things Google has ever invented. I only have a few websites but I’ve injected Google Analytics code into all of them so I can track who’s viewing my pages, for how long, and where from. Needless to say, I was astonished when I checked Google Analytics on my iPhone and I didn’t see an iPhone-optimized page like their mobile search and Gmail pages.
Thankfully Thomas Blackburn has picked up Google’s slack and created the slickest Google Analytics app I’ve seen. Called Analytics Pro, the app provides a simple but powerful UI to access Google Analytics on your iPhone. The default summary reports give you gives you a clear view of recent visitor activity in five different categories: Visitors, Traffic Sources, Referral Sources, Top Content, Top 10 Countries and Operating System.
But the app goes way beyond the basics as it has myriad reports and sub-reports under the headings of Visitors, Traffic Sources, Content, Goals, and E-Commerce. Throughout your data you can drill down into your daily and hourly statistics and the intuitive date picker lets you easily choose a date or range of dates in just a few taps. All your metrics graphs and maps can be viewed in horizontal or landscape views. Analytics Pro even supports multiple Google Analytics accounts.
Google Analytics on the web is such a massively layered service it can be hard to navigate for the uninitiated. Analytics Pro has succeeded where Google failed, by making all your data, charts, and metrics easily accessible on an iPhone. Matter of fact, it’s even easier to view my reports in the Analytics Pro app than it is on the Analytics web site.
If you’re a website owner who needs to view his sites analytics on the go, I high recommend Analytics Pro. The app is $6.99 in the App Store and requires iPhone OS 3.1.2 or later.
